Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the United States Army during the conflicts with the Plains Indians as a Wagoner in Company G, 8th United States Regular Cavalry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery against the Apache Indians at the Chiricahua Mountains, Arizona on October 20, 1869. His simple citation reads "Gallantry in action". His Medal was awarded to him on February 14, 1870. Although his brave actions were against the Plains Indians, it is erroneously listed as being during the Civil War, and is listed in the Official Citations of that period. During that conflict he served in the 2nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry in Companies B and M, serving from September 1, 1861 until his honorably muster out on August 7, 1865.
