Lewis was possibly born in New York. He was the son of James Titus and Maria Dennison. He enlisted as a Private in Company B, 3rd Vermont Infantry Regiment on January 6, 1861, was mustered in on July 16, 1861, and was mustered out on September 26, 1861. He enlisted as a Corporal in Company C, 8th Vermont Infantry Regiment on February 18, 1862. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant and mustered out on February 28, 1863. On that date he was mustered into Company A, United States Colored Troops, 75th Infantry Regiment. He was discharged as a First Lieutenant on October 3, 1865.
