Funeral Services Held For Gaston Palmer March 21

On the first day of spring, Saturday, March 20,death came to Gaston Palmer, prominent resident of the Normangee country, at his home here.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the Methodist church under tghe direction of Davis Cozart with the Rev. J.B. Davis of Lexington former paster here, officiating. Burial was in Hopewell cemetery.
Mr. Palmer was former state representative from Leon and Madison counties. He served in the state legislature in that capacity until 1939.
Until his health began to fail several years ago, Mr. Palmer devoted much interest and energy to public issues and the public welfare.
He was greatly interested in the welfare of the Normangee country and lent his energies to numerous projects. He was active in programs to hard-surface the Old San Antonio road and the road to Normangee Park. He assisted in organization of athe Normangee chamber of commerce and served as its president.
He was a member of the Methodist church in which he was a steward and had been a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Palmer was born in Mississippi 70 years ago and came to Texas in 1886 with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Palmer. He and Miss Edna Dilleshaw were married 46 years ago.
The floral tribute to Mr. Palmer was the largest ever seen here, according to local flower dealers. Church services were attended by 400 persons, of whom nearly half came from out of town, including Madisonville, all sections of Leon County, Houston, Franklin, Huntsville, and numerous other places over the state. Pallbearers were Lee and Lamar Palmer, Wyatt Sandel, Phil Ward, J. L. Kyle, Joel Kyle, all the nephews of Mr. Palmer.
Mr. Palmer had been in failing health. Several weeks ago he became worse and had been confind to bed since then.
Until his recent illness, he operated the Wilson grocery here.
Survivors included his widow; six daughters, Mrs. Myrle Wilson, Mrs Jim Martin, Mrs, Cathryn Taylor, all of Houston; Mrs Wilma Closs of Port Neches and Mrs Jac Turner of Mobile, Al.; nine grand children; and three sisters Mrs. Tommie Ward, Mrs. J. M. Hunt and Miss Lulu Palmer, all of Normangee.
Mr. Palmer was born Nov. 23, 1878. He joined the Methodist church in 1904 and was a life-time steward.
The surviving grandchildren are Morgan, Betty, Carolyn and Frank Closs, Gaston, Virginia and Mamie Jean Martin, Jimmy and Jerrie Parsons.
