Sam was the oldest son of George Whobrey and Hazel Allen. He was born and raised in Southern Illinois. He joined the Navy after graduation from Benton Township High School. He first married Mildred Louise Neal and they had three children, Kathleen, Roderick and Susan. He continued to serve his country in the US Navy until 1968 when he retired. He and his second wife, Lula Mae (Smith), lived and worked in the Virginia and North Carolina area.
