She took her nurses training in Chattanooga at Baroness Erlanger Hospital after graduating from Spring City High School in 1936. After obtaining her nursing certificate, she took the state nurses examine and then applied to enroll in the US Army Nurse Corp. She took her oath at Ft. McPherson in Atlanta in November 1940.
