Adam was the son of Ezekiel and Betsy (Chubbuck) Gardner.

After learning the shoemaker trade from his father, Adam moved from Bedford to Bartlett as a young man (possibly at the behest of his uncle, Levi Chubbuck, who had settled there many years earlier) and there met and married Rebecca Pitman.

Here are my notes on Adam and Rebecca's children, based on the 1830 census and other sources [brackets indicate 1830 census data]:

__ Xxx 1811 [F 15-19] Almira (21 in 1832)
__ Xxx 1813 [F 15-19]
__ Xxx 1816 [F 10-14] Hannah? (44 in 1860)
__ Xxx 1818 [M 10-14] Joseph P. (32 in 1850)
__ Xxx 1821 [M 5-9 NOT in census] Ezekiel
27 Dec 1824 [M 5-9] Stephen C.
26 Nov 1826 [M 0-4] James K.
__ Xxx 1830 [F 0-4] Mary P.
03 Aug 1832 Levi C.

Adam was a veteran of the war of 1812, serving 2 years.

"U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914" at Ancestry.com: Gardner, Adam D., Private, 9th U.S. Inf'y commanded by Capt. Moses Hoit, 5 ft. 5 in., hazel eyes, light hair and complexion, age 22, occupation: cordwainer, born Bedford, NH. Enlisted April 8th or 18th, 1813, at Dover, NH. Discharged from Capt. E. (So it looks like there will be more info in his pension file.)
