The Anthon Herald, 18 November 1942, page 1: Exactly two weeks after the death of her mother, Mrs. Richard Bowers, 43, passed away in St. Joseph's hospital at Sioux City following an operation. Dora Susan Fletcher was born August 29, 1899, near Battle Creek, Iowa, to George and Orpha Fletcher. Moving to Kingsley when a small child, she grew to womanhood in that community. She was married December 3, 1919, to Richard Bowers, and their union was blessed with three children. They farmed in the Kingsley vicinity until 1935, when they moved to the Rock Branch-Anthon vicinity, where the remainder of her life was spent. Mrs. Bowers' mother, Mrs. George Fletcher, died October 28, and she entered the hospital the following week. Undergoing an operation for removal of a tumor, the ordeal and resulting complications were too much for her strength and the end came Wednesday evening, November 11, 1942, in the Sioux City hospital where she had been a patient eight days. Survivors include the widower, Richard Bowers; three son, Wayne, Veryl and Charles of Anthon; five brothers, Earl of Merced, California; Herbert, Albert, Raymond and Frank Fletcher, all of Kingsley; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Trout of Russell, Minnesota; Mrs. Gertie Finch of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Mrs. Mabel Goosic of Fairfield, Nebraska; and Mrs. Farsina Spink of Kingsley; and one grandson. Blessed with a kind and friendly disposition, Mrs. Bowers made numerous friends and was held in the highest esteem by all with whom she came in contact. Devotion to her family and home was her main thought, and she will be missed beyond words by her husband, children, other relatives and a legion of friends. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, November 14, from the Methodist Church at Kingsley with Rev. M.L. Metcalf officiating. Burial was in the Kingsley Cemetery. Pallbearers were Charles Bappe, Frank Ashley, Chris Petersen, Ed Roark, John Godbersen and R.E. Neifert.
