Valerie W. Shepherd, 88, of Independence, Kansas passed away Sunday, March 20, 2005 at Jane Phillips Medical Center, Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
Valerie was born April 14, 1916 in Galena, Kansas, to James Theodore and Missie Cynthia (Burnett) Bryan. She was raised in Galena, Kansas, and at the age of 10 her mother moved to Independence, Kansas, following the death of her father. She graduated from Independence High School in 1934. She also attended Independence Community College receivied her associate's degree.
Valerie married LeRoy Shepherd on April 24, 1950 in Leavenworth, Kansas. Mr. Shepherd preceded her in death on September 27, 1986.
Valerie was a nurse at Mercy Hospital and worked in Surgery and the Emergency Room. Her last assignment was in Physical Therapy before her retirement. She was a member of the Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church of Independence and also attended the Berean Christian Mission.
Mrs. Shepherd is survived by two children, Cynthia T. Goodwin and her husband Thomas of Cheverly, Maryland and LeRoy B. Shepherd and his wife, Lori of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; one sister, Adelene Bryan of Independence, Kansas; two grandchildren, Sherri D. Robinson of Brooklyn, New York and Terri Roman and her husband, Michael of Ossining, New York; and two great grandchildren., Marcus and Yahra Roman of Ossining, New York.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers and three sisters.
Visitation hours for Mrs. Shepherd will be held at the Penwell-Gabel Webb Rodrick Chapel on Wednesday, March 23, 2005 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services for Valerie W. Shepherd will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 24, 2005 at the Penwell-Gabel Webb Rodrick Chapel with Reverend Ben Mosley, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence, Kansas
