Edward Carl Moore , 89, of Harrisonburg, died June 9, 2004, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He was born on Sept. 2, 1914, and was the son of the late Ira Hupp Moore and Hettie Virginia Whissen Moore .

A graduate of Dayton High School, he was a member of the baseball team. His entire life was spent in Harrisonburg where he was active in many community organizations. He was a member of BPO Elks Lodge No. 450 where he was a Trustee for many years. He served on the Board of the Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation Department, and was an avid fan of the Harrisonburg Turks Baseball Team and served on their Board of Directors. He was an honorary life member of Hose Company No. 4, and belonged to the UCT for over 50 years. A man of great integrity and generosity, he contributed to many charities and causes, including the Rockingham Memorial Hospital Cancer Center and Father Flannigans Boys Town.

He was a successful businessman, having owned and operated Harrisonburg Motor Express until 1993 and also invested in numerous other business ventures in the area; including banking, taxi service and a radio station.

He treasured his many friends, some of whom he visited with daily at the L&S Diner. Being surrounded by his family was his greatest joy, whether at family holiday gatherings or the Elks Wednesday night family buffet. After retirement, he was a familiar sight riding his John Deere lawn mower.

On Oct. 18, 1941, he married Beulah Elizabeth "Bessie" Sisk, with whom he shared 53 years of marriage until her death in 1994. He is survived by three sons, James Edward Moore and wife JoAnn, Carson Ira "Mickey" Moore and wife Nancye, and Joseph Howard Moore and wife Linda; and a daughter, Diana Faye Showalter; also by 10 grandchildren; Joseph "Jay" William Moore , Michelle Moore Snell, James Edward Moore Jr., Michael Kevin Moore , Brian Joseph Moore , Kenneth Martin Moore , Diana Layne Ballard, Thomas D. Burgess IV, Jefferson Moore Burgess and Tanya Danielle Burgess; also 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

He is also survived by a sister, Willie Ruth Miller of Harrisonburg and was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 13 at Asbury United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
