"Paul R. Shuttleworth, Lt. Col., USAF (Ret.) died at Riverside, Calif., January 26, 1999, at the age of 75. He was the son of Charles and Alice Shuttleworth and was born in Thompson May 3, 1923.

He attended Thompson Public School where he played in the band, was the catcher on the baseball team and played on the basketball team. He graduated with the class of 1940 and moved to California soon afterwards. He attended college there until he joined the Army in 1941. He was selected for pilot's training and became a pilot after completion of training.

Lt. Col. Shuttleworth was a C-47 pilot during World War II, serving in the South Pacific. After the war ended, he was an investigator in Japan for the Army's Office of Special Investigation. This was during the Korean War. He retained his reserve commission during this period and returned to flying with the U.S. Air Force where he flew refueling aircraft, KC-97's out of Larsen Air Force Base in the state of Washington and, later, KC-135's out of March Air Force Base in Riverside, Calif. He retired from the Air Force after 27 years of service in April of 1969. While in the Air Force he received the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters and the Army of Occupation, Japan, Medal among others.

After his retirement, Shuttleworth accepted a position as a fraud investigator for the Riverside County Welfare Department. He retired from this occupation in 1980.

He was an active member of the Order of Daedalians, a lifelong Cubs fan and an avid golfer.

While in high school, Paul was introduced to June Peterson of Forest City by his friend, Robert Fisher. Paul and June married after his graduation from flight training. They had been married 55 years at the time of his death. The couple have two daughters, Susan Tavaglione of Visalia, Calif., and Nancy MacIssac of Milford, Del.; and three grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his sister Lomena (nee Koenecke) Shirley and his parents."
