A native of Polk County, he was a member of the Slagle Creek Missionary Baptist Church. He was a retired painter.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Cowden, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Sherrie, Weableau; seven daughters, Lela Cates and her husband Lloyd, Beverly Manes and her husband Gene; and Connie Robertson, all of Bolivar; Janie Sanders, Springfield; Margie Barker and her husband Lloyd, Lebanon; Janett Slagle and her husband Donnie, Morrisville; and Ronda Mitchell and her husband Terry, Fairplay; 23 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services were at 1:30 PM Friday, Dec. 8 at Butler Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Noel Gladden Officiating. Music was by the Slagle Creek Missionary Baptist Church choir, with Marie Brakebill as pianist. Burial was in Slagle Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ernie Presley, Harlan Graham, Gene Skinner, Mike Cowden, Carl Hood and Leonard Mauck.
