Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A dry good merchant before the war, when that conflict began he immediately offered his services to the Union, and was mustered in as a Sergeant in the 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 29, 1861. He was honorably mustered out with his unit on August 2, 1861, but rejoined the war effort on August 10, 1861 when he was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the 32nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He would go on to rise to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the regiment before joining the 12th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services" and was honorably mustered out on July 15, 1865.
