His parents were married 20 April 1831 in Sheffield, Berkshire County, Mass. before the young couple started westward to Ohio. Their son, Alvah was born in Ohio. Unfortunately, Alvah, the father, died a year after his son's birth. Marcia remarried on 3 Oct 1839 in Lorain, OH to Edward Durand, a widower with children. Marcia would go on to have 5 children with Edward Durand. After Edward's death, Marcia married in 1857 Douglass Smith, a fellow Massachusetts transplant and a widower, who had been married to Sally Burrell, a first cousin to Marcia's first husband Alvah.
