Photo:
Oscar in the loving arms of his grandma Nancy Smith Clifton at Newton County, Arkansas. Brother Fred and Grandpa John "Frank" Clifton also shown. Sadly, Oscar & Fred's mother Terissee died of cancer when Oscar was 17 months old. Before she died, she asked Grandma & Grandpa Clifton to care for her two youngest, Fred and Oscar.

Several years later, when Daddy Sam Clifton decided to load a covered wagon and move to Oklahoma, Grandma Clifton's heart could not bear it. She had Grandpa Clifton catch up to the travelers on the road to Oklahoma. In the middle of the night he slipped up to their camp and tried to take Oscar back to Arkansas, but "no,no,no," Sam insisted on keeping his children together.

Miscellaneous Facts:
Oscar was three weeks old when his grandpa Isaac Neighbors died.

Oscar fell out of bed when he was a young child and his hand fell into the fire that warmed the house. His little finger was damaged from this accident.

At about age 10 to 12 years old while Oscar was playing outside, he suddenly fell down screaming with leg pain. He was diagnosed with Polio. Doctors said he would never walk again, but Oscar, being very strong-minded, was determined to walk again. After weeks of staying in bed and being carried around, he decided to try to walk. He started using crutches and then canes. He always had a limp and would drag his right leg while walking, but he did walk on his own again.

Hard-working Oscar lost the last three fingers on his right hand in a combine machine accident when his hand was caught in a chain.
