Boyd L. Fugal, 89, a giant and gentle soul, peacefully passed away on November 27, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family, after his mortal body wore out in the service of his family and fellowman. He was born to Niels and Viola Fugal in Pleasant Grove, Utah, at the family home on October 22, 1921. Boyd grew up in Pleasant Grove where he had fond memories of his childhood and the many friends and associates he had throughout the years. Upon graduation he attended Utah State Agricultural College. While in college, World War II interrupted his schooling. Boyd enlisted in the Naval Air Corps in 1942 as an aviation cadet. After ground and combat flight training he was commissioned an Officer and received his Navy Wings as a Naval Aviator. He received the Air Medal and three Gold Stars as a fighter pilot flying the Corsair F4U-4, serving with Bomber Fighter Squadron 86, assigned to the USS Wasp in action against enemy forces in the Pacific. After the war he spent seventeen years in the U.S. Naval Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. Boyd married his sweetheart Venice Jacob. Their marriage was sealed for eternity on April 20, 1944, in the Salt Lake Temple. After active duty he returned home and went into the construction business with his father and brothers. After his father's death, he and his brothers became the principle owners of Niels Fugal Sons Company. Boyd recently received the "Ryberg Award" from the Associated General Contractors of Utah for his "Lifetime Service to the Construction Industry." Boyd fully understood and learned the blessings of hard work. He was grateful to his father for teaching him the principles of honesty and service. Boyd has given a lifetime of community and church service. His civic contributions were with the American Legion, Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce and served on the Alpine School District Board of Education. He was president of the Manila Culinary Water Board as well as the Pleasant Grove Irrigation Company for many years. One year, Boyd and Venice were the Grand Marshals for Strawberry Days in Pleasant Grove. Boyd served as the Bishop of the Manila Ward when he was a young man, followed by being called as the Stake Mission President and for 15 years as the Stake President of the Timpanogos Stake. He served in a Branch Presidency at the MTC and Stake Patriarch of the North Field Stake. Boyd attributes the Mission he and Venice served for two years as the Director of the New York City Visitors Center in Manhattan, as the greatest opportunity he has ever had to express his feelings about the things he held most precious and dear. Boyd is survived by his wife, Venice, their nine children; Connie (Steve) Hunter, Annette (Mel) Erickson, Daniel (Jill) Fugal, Kathleen (Bruce) Burtenshaw, Guy (Paula) Fugal, Viola (Gale) Gilbert, Celeste (Scott) Grossman, Niels (Tana) Fugal and Patricia (Gregg) Smith, 38 grandchildren and 70 great grandchildren and his sister Joyce (Kent) Giles. He was preceded in death by his parents, Niels and Viola, brothers, Neil and Grant, four sisters, Melba Gooch, Avis West, Edna Holdaway, Lucille Turner and granddaughter Michelle Paul Hall. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at the North Field Stake Center, 105 West 1800 North, Pleasant Grove. A viewing will be held at the North Field Stake Center, Friday evening, December 3, 2010 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. prior the service at the Stake Center on Saturday.
