Helene Sophia von Aschwege was born March 29, 1873 in Washington County, Illinois, and passed away at her home northeast of Chapman, Neb. on June 1, 1950, at the age of 77 years, two months and three days.

Sophie (as she was commonly known) was the third and youngest child of Diedrich and Katherine von Aschwege. The parents, and the two older children, Anna and Chris, had arrived in American, from Germany a few years previously in 1868.

During Sophie's early girlhood, the family lived near the village of Hoyleton, Illinois, southeast of St. Louis, Mo. In 1881 the family came to Merrick County, Nebr. They settled on a farm south of Palmer, in Prairie Creek precinct. Here they found a permanent home among close relatives and friends including the mother's sister, two brothers, and their families.

The parents were members of the German Methodist Church before they came to America. Upon their arrival in this community in 1881, they found the Zion Evangelical Church already established here, and the family made it their church home for several years.

Later, a small German Methodist group was formed, and a church was built on a corner of the Aschwege farm. Sophie became a member there and remained a devout Methodist the rest of her life.

As a young woman, she was often concerned with her spiritual growth. For several terms she attended Iowa Wesleyan, at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

Sophie was united in marriage with John W. Schutz on October 10, 1900. They began their life together on the farm, nearby, which was to be her home for almost 50 years.

Three children were born to them. Wesley (now of Columbus, Nebr), Henry (who lives on the home farm) and Marie (now of Denver, Colo.)

Sophie Schutz was a devoted wife and mother. She accepted whole-heartedly her role as homemaker, and earnestly promoted the wellbeing of her loved ones. Her Christian faith always sustained her in moments of sorrow or trial, and it became a great source of comfort to her during the last few years of failing health

Among her generation of the Aschwege family, her only survivor is a sister-in-law, Mrs. Meta von Aschwege of Palmer.

Others who survive, and mourn her departure, are her husband, three children, two daughters-in-law, four grandchildren and numerous relatives and friends. (funeral details followed)
