Graduated as Valdictorian from high school at Eden, TX. Only 5 in the grad. class. Attended Texas Christian Univ. 3 1/2 years where he played on the golf team.
Worked as a tailor in San Angelo, TX. Managed Day's Dry Goods store (previously owned by his father) in Eden, TX.
Gilbert's first wife, Audna, was visiting her parents in the Los Angeles area when she was killed in a tragic train-car accident in Wittier, CA on 31 Dec 1929. Audna left Gilbert with a 2-year-old infant daughter, that was returned to Eden, Concho Co. TX, where she was raised by Gilbert's mother, Flora Day, until she entered the 5th grade.
In 1932 Gilbert remarried. He began farming in 1936 in Fife, TX on the Colorado River. Raised grain, watermelon, cantaloupe. Moved to a farm in Blacksmith, AR, then to Waldron, AR. where he had a distributor-ship for International Harvestor farm emplements. In 1942 he worked as a carpenter to build Fort Chaffee Army Base at Fort Smith, AR. He moved on to work building Walker Air Force Base, Roswell, NM, then to Douglas Air Force Base, Douglas, AZ, then to work at Davis Monthan Air Force Base, Tucson, AZ. Moving to Phoenix, AZ he worked with Karl Shoe stores then as manager of a store in Calexico, CA. Returning to Phoenix he worked as carpenter building additions to Good Samaritan Hospital. Working as a carpenter he moved to Big Springs, TX. Moving to Roswell, NM, he had 5 acres south of town where he began an egg business supplying eggs to grocery stores, cafes, & bakeries.
