Douglas L. Folsom, Jr., passed away in Prescott on Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at the age of 87. He was born on Jan. 19, 1915, in Loachapoka, Ala., the third of ten children born to the Rev. Douglas L. and Lillian (Hart) Folsom, Sr.

Rev. Folsom was a member of the Alabama Methodist Conference and served in parishes across Alabama and north Florida, so the family frequently moved. Doug made friends easily and was always happy wherever his family lived.

He graduated from high school in Pine Hill, Ala., and from Auburn University with a degree as a teacher and school administrator.

He originally married Sarah Blanton and they both taught school in Alabama. Doug also served as a principal in several schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Lt. (j.g.) in July 1943 and served until February 1946.

After his discharge from the Navy his family moved to Tucson where Doug became affiliated with the U.S. Veterans Administration. After living one year in Tucson he was transferred to the V.A. Hospital in Prescott, where he stayed until his retirement in 1979. He held several positions before being appointed Chief of Domiciliary Services in 1968. Many veterans as well as V.A. Hospital doctors and staff held Doug in high esteem for his ability to provide a positive influence and change people's lives.

After Sarah Folsom passed away, Doug married long-time friend Gail Goodell in November 1969. Doug and Gail enjoyed 33 years together traveling, entertaining and visiting with friends and family across the U.S. Doug was an avid sports fan, supporting youth sports and professional events alike. If it was played with a ball, he loved it, especially football. Much of the Folsoms' social life revolved around which team was playing on TV, and Doug's favorites were University of Alabama, Auburn University and Nebraska's "Big Red".

After retiring from the V.A. Administration, Doug and Gail purchased a second home in Allen, Neb., where they had the chance to relive much of Gail's childhood and spend time with family and friends. Doug became a community leader in Allen and a local sports enthusiast, even serving as the "play by play" announcer for the Allen Eagles High School football team.

Doug also devoted his life to supporting the local Prescott community, serving as a member of BPOE, Loyal Order of Moose, VFW and American Legion. He was especially supportive of Little League Baseball, cheering his boys to many victories. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend. He was know for his ready smile, sweet personality and his desire to serve his fellow man, and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Gail, sons, Dr. Larry Folsom (Eloisa) of Tracy, Calif., Jim Folsom (Laurie) of Phoenix, Rex Goodell (Joan) of Las Vegas, Nev., Neil Goodell (Annie) of Prescott; daughter Jill Goodell Hale (Richard) of Prescott; also grandchildren, Justin and Ben Folsom of Phoenix, Bill and Doug Folsom of California, Kristen Neuman (Geoff) of Las Vegas, Kelly Miller (Tony) of Yazoo City, Miss., as well as four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers and sisters, Dr. James C. Folsom of Santa Rosa, Calif., John Folsom of Flomaton, Ala., Dr. Walter Folsom of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Bess Spurgeon of Birmingham, Ala., and Reba Manix of Sacramento, Calif., as well as many nieces and nephews.

Doug's family and friends all loved him and will greatly miss him, but thank God that we have enjoyed him for so many years.

Friends and family are invited to attend a receiving of friends on Thursday, Aug.22, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home, 240 South Cortez Street in Prescott and a memorial service at Prescott Community Church, 3151 Willow Creek Road on Friday, Aug. 23, at 2p.m.
