Nellie H Bird, 90, a lifelong Superior, WI, resident died Sat, Nov 27, 2010 in St Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, MN. Nellie was born July 22, 1920 to Mayme (Jaffee) and Aaron Kushner. She was a graduate of Superior Central High School.

Nellie and Lester Bird were married Oct 6, 1945. They were in the tavern business for over sixty years, having owned the Palace Bar for ten years and on Dec 15, 1959, they opened Les Bird's Bar. Their motto "This bar is where ladies and gentlemen are served by ladies and gentlemen".

In the fall, the bar holds a local food shelf of garden harvests. Wednesday nights holds a meat raffle to benefit the Evening Lions Club and the Matthew I Pionck Park in Oliver, WI. The bar sponsored golf teams at Nemadji and Pattison golf courses and were also past sponsors of area bowling and baseball teams. Nellie and Les were members of the Douglas County Tavern League and the Superior Elk's Lodge No 403.

Preceding her in death, were her parents; her husband, Lester "Les" on July 17, 1995; a brother, Arthur Kushner; and two sisters, Gertrude Kessler and Sadie Salnick.

She is lovingly remembered by her sister, Berniece Harris of Milwaukee, WI; her nieces and nephews, Patricia "Pat" Cronin of Superior, Richard (Lois) Kushner of Orlando, FL, Marcia Holding, Kathy Sabol and Michael and Ethan Harris; several great-nieces; great-nephews; great-great-nieces; great-great-nephews; and numerous friends made while in business at this South Superior neighborhood bar.

Interment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery.
