Two Are Now Dead After House Fire

An early morning fire at a Tyronza residence Saturday left a mother and daughter dead; and two sons in a Memphis hospital.

Wilma Duncan, age 5, was dead at the scene, said Poinsett County Coroner Homer Bata. The child's mother, Evelyn Payton, 39, died at 10 Saturday night at City of Memphis Hospital of burns she received, a nursing supervisor at the hospital said.

Mrs. Payton's two sons, Paul Jason Duncan, 3, and Stanley Duncan, 14 months, were transported to City of Memphis Hospital, where Paul is listed in guarded condition and Stanley is in critical condition, the hospital official said.

Another child, Lana Duncan, 13, escaped the fire with only minor injuries.

The wooden frame house was engulfed in flames when volunteer fire department personnel arrived at the scene, and four of the five occupants of the home had escaped to a neighbor's house, said Tyronza Volunteer Fire Department Chief Donald Nunnally.

According to Nunnally, the fire apparently started in the living room in a wood-burning furnace. Poinsett County Sheriff's office personnel also responded to the call at 3:25 Saturday morning.

Farmers Union Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete and will be announced later.—Jonesboro Sun, February 10, 1980

Double Rites

Two children were still being treated in Memphis hospitals this morning for burns they received in an early Saturday morning house fire at Tyronza that claimed the lives of their mother and sister.

Paul Jason Duncan, 3, was listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Memphis City Hospital this morning, a hospital spokesman said. Stanley Duncan, 14 months, was listed in stabilized but critical condition at LeBonheur Children's Clinic.

The children's mother, Mrs. Evelyn Payton, 39, died Saturday night from burns received in the fire. Her daughter, Wilma Irene Duncan, 5, was dead at the scene, said Poinsett County Coroner Homer Bata.

Graveside services for Mrs. Payton and Wilma Irene Duncan are set for 10 Tuesday morning at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery south of Jonesboro. Farmers Union Funeral Home of Jonesboro is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Payton lived in the Jonesboro area most of her life and was of the Pentecostal belief.
