Andy Turner, 79, formerly of Richmond, died Nov. 22, 2010 at his daughter's home in St. Louis, Mo.

Andy was born March 4, 1931 the fifth of eight children, in Cabool, Mo., son of Tom Turner and Olive Johnston Turner. Living in a one-room schoolhouse during the Great Depression, the family was poor but not lacking in fun times and lots of love. Andy did his part by going to work in the grocery business at the age of 12.

Andy served his country in the Navy from 1950-1954, fell in love and married Freeda Wimberley in 1954 and graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1958.

He moved his family to Richmond in 1964 to become the manager of the IGA Foodliner. The store flourished-he became the owner and built a new modern supermarket. After selling the store in 1975, he managed Harold's Supermarket in Carrollton then returned to Richmond to run the Front Porch.

Eventually, he opened the Mushroom Patch, giving Richmond another successful family restaurant. During his years in business, he was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce and was chair of the deacons at First Baptist Church.

Andy was well loved for his friendly manner and his readiness with a joke for every occasion. His affable nature made him popular as an emcee for church and community functions, and every event began with an original poem full of puns and silly humor.

He was preceded in death by his wife Freeda Turner. He was dearly loved and is already missed by his children: Debbie, Becky, Tom, Judy, Windy, and David; his grandchildren: Bobby, Kimberly, Nikki, Aaron, Joseph, Caleb, Daniel, Ty, Shelly, Dianne, and Briony; his great-grandchildren: Alex, Samantha, Skylar, Sarah, and Aiden; and his surviving siblings: Bill, Betty, Pete, Jeri, Mary Ann and Sue.

During this season of love and thankfulness, our family suggests that Andy's life be celebrated by passing on his spirit of open generosity, with a smile on our faces and laughter in our hearts. A private memorial service and interment will be held at Richmond Memorial Gardens at a later date.
