In the Civil War Switzler served as Lt. Col., 6th Missouri Cavalry. On March 13, 1865 he was appointed Brevet Brigadier General, USV.

Theodore Switzler began his military career by organizing a company of the Dade County Home Guards and serving as their captain. After participating in the Battle of Wilson's Creek, Switzler's company was combined with others to form the 6th Missouri Cavalry. Switzler was promoted to major on March 9, 1862, and to lieutenant colonel on August 13, 1862.


The 6th Missouri saw action at Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove, and during the Vicksburg and Red River campaigns.


Switzler was brevetted to brigadier general of U. S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865; he resigned from the service on April 10, 1865, and died in January 1879 in St. Louis.
