Dr. Reuben Samuel
He was the stepfather of Frank and Jesse James, having married their mother, Zerelda in 1855. He was born in Owen County Kentucky in 1828 and attended medical school in Cincinnati. He practiced medicine in Missouri before their marriage. After their marriage he turned to farming her place in Clay County Mo. In 1863 he was hanged three times by Union troops who were searching for Frank James and William Quantrill. He almost died and suffered brain damage. Jesse was also beaten as they tried to get information on his brother. In 1875 the Pinkertons fire bombed the family farmhouse in their search for Frank and Jesse. Dr Samuel's son Archie was killed and Zerelda was severely injured. He died in 1908 after spending six years at the State Mental Hospital in St. Joseph.
