Lt. Col. (Ret.) Gordon S. Alvadj, U.S. Army, age 76, of Niceville, Fla., passed away Nov. 24, 2010.

He was born on March 3, 1934, in Milwaukee. Upon graduation from the University of Detroit, he was commissioned as a Field Artillery Officer in the U.S. Army. He served 24 years, including two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was a Vietnam Subsector Advisor, where he received the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster, along with many other awards. He worked for Electronic Data Systems for 14 years after retiring from the military and later moved to Niceville in 1997. He married the love of his life, Mary Lou King, on Jan. 18, 1958, and they enjoyed 52 years of marriage. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus at his church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ramona Alvadj; his sister, Judy Lunceford; and his son, Bradley Lawrence Alvadj. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lou; daughters, Kim Rodriguez (Joel) of Niceville, Kelly Chamberlain (Paul) of Canton, Mass., and Kathy Jaragoski (Paul) of Suwanee, Ga.; daughter-in-law, Susie Parker Alvadj of Navarre, Fla.; grandchildren, Katie Alvadj of New York City, Kally Peace of Niceville, Jake and Jena Jaragoski of Suwanee, Gregory and Matthew Chamberlain of Canton, Kevin, serving in Iraq; and Jules Shipe of Peachtree City, Ga.; brother, Preston Alvadj of Milwaukee; and sisters, Beverly Geroux of Waukesha, Wisc., and Joby Logue of Champaign, Ill.

Gordon was a loving husband, wonderful father, adoring grandfather, and good friend to many and he will be greatly missed. Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Twin Cities Hospital, especially the Critical Care Unit for their kindness and compassion.
