HANNIBAL - Virgil Edward Megown, 94, of New London, died at 9:35 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at the home of his sister of rural Center.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, at the New London First Christian Church. Pastor Tom Day will officiate. Burial will be at Barkley Cemetery at New London.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, at the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel in Hannibal and from 9 a.m. until time of services, Monday at the church.
Mr. Megown was born Nov. 3, 1911, in New London to Benton B. and Maude M. Grisham Megown.
He married Mary Ruth Hayden in New London in September 1946. She preceded him in death in June 1957.
Survivors include one sister, Velma M. Evans of Center; two nephews, Ronald (Judy) Evans of Center and Kent (Wendy) Evans of Lincoln, Neb.; nine great-nieces and great-nephews; and three great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, William W. Evans; and one niece, Kay Ann Hutchcraft.
Mr. Megown was an abstracter and operated Megown Abstract Co. in Ralls County for many years. He was a 1929 graduate of New London High School and a graduate of Hannibal LaGrange College. He was a lifelong member of the New London First Christian Church. He was a member of the New London Masonic Lodge, No. 307, A.F. & A.M. In February 1929 Virgil joined the National Rifle Association and was the association's longest continuous living member. He was an avid shooter, hunter and fisherman. He had won numerous awards in shooting competition.
Memorials may be made to the New London First Christian Church.
Pallbearers will be James Stephens, James Overstreet, A.R. Thompson, Lynn Kilpatrick, Dr. Thomas Fischer and Jim Current.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Robert King, Clifford Barr, John Briscoe, Leo McBride, Leo Harrison, III, Gene Zinn and Richard Weiner.
