Hannah Rickard (1806-1882) was the daughter of John Rickard (1773-1885), and Catherine Ehle (1781-1860).

Hanna Rickard married Hiram Sayles in 1825. Hannah and Hiram became the parents of at least seven children:
• Jonas Sayles (1826-1892); • Almira Sayles (1829-1889); • Rowena Sayles (1831-1918); • Mary Charlotte Sayles (1832-1917); • William Sayles (1837-1913); • Harriet Sayles (1839-1925); and, • John Sayles (born 1842, death unknown).

CHRONOLOGY:

• 1830: Names and.or households listed in the 1830 census for the Town of Manlius, Onondaga County, New York:

• In 1837, Hiram Sayles, with his wife, Hannah (Rickard) Sayles and their young children migrated from New York to Ohio.

• 1840 UNITED STATES FEDERAL CENSUS:
Hiram Sayles and his family are listed on the 1840 Wayne County, Ohio, census.

• 1850 UNITED STATES FEDERAL CENSUS:
Hiram and Hannah Sayles and six of their seven children (Almera, Rowena, Charlotte, William, Harriet, and John) are listed on the 1850 CENSUS for Knox, Holmes County, Ohio. [NOTE: "Sayles" is misspelled as "Tayler" on the 1850 Holmes County, Ohio census]. The 1850 census for Medina County, Ohio, lists Hiram and Hannah's oldest son, Jonas Sayles, residing in the household of Samuel F. Chapman, in Westfield township, Medina County, Ohio.

Hannah Sails [Sayles], WIDOWED, is shown in Medina County, Ohio, with her youngest son, John Sails [Sayles], who was then nineteen years old.

1858-1865:
THE LOCATION OF SAYLES CHILDEN AFTER THE [1858] DEATH OF THEIR FATHER, HIRAM SAYLES:

*JONAS SAYLES (first-born son of Hiram Sayles and Hannah Rickard Sayles) cannot be found on the 1860 CENSUS; as a result, it is presumed that perhaps Jonas had accompanied his younger brother, William, to the Pike's Peak, Colorado.

*WILLIAM SAYLES (second-born son of Hiram Sayles and Hannah Rickard Sayles) left home shortly after his father's death; "first going to Michigan, then to Omaha, Nebraska, where he joined a mining party and drove an ox team overland to Pike's Peak, Colorado, remaining there about three years and engaging in mining for gold and prospecting. In 1861 he returned to Omaha to offer his services in time of his country's need in the great civil strife, and enlisted in the [Company B], Fourth Iowa Volunteer Infantry, serving three years." (SOURCE: Obituary of William Sayles).

*ALMERA SAYLES (daughter of Hiram Sayles and Hannah Rickard Sayles) married John Remington, and is shown on the 1860 CENSUS in Richland, Holmes County, Ohio.
*ROWENA SAYLES had married Peter B. Voorus in about 1857, and it appears that they were still living in Ohio in 1860.
*MARY CHARLOTTE SAYLES married Jesse Fetterman in 1857, and they are shown on the 1860 CENSUS in Harrisville, Medina, Ohio.

*HARRIET SAYLES had migrated to Onondaga County, New York, where other Sayles/Cass family members are also shown on the Manlius, NY census. i.e., In 1860, daughter Harriet Sayles is shown on the Manlius, Onondaga County, New York census, in the household of "Catharine Torry." Harriet Sayles marries Adam Clark Morey in about 1861.

*JOHN SAYLES, age 18; youngest son of Hiram and Hannah (Rickard) Sayles, is shown with his widowed mother on the 1860 CENSUS, in Medina County, Ohio. John Sayles reportedly died in the Civil War, but as yet, this is unproven.
.

1870: Hannah (Rickard) Sayles remarried in April of 1870. Hannah and her 2nd husband, Cyrus Mills (also of Medina County, Ohio), are shown on the 1870 UNITED STATES FEDERAL CENSUS, in Harrisville, Medina, County Ohio. The are both 65 years of age.

1880: Hannah Mills is now listed as a "widow," and is shown of the head of the household on the 1880 UNITED STATES FEDERAL CENSUS. Residing in the household with Hannah is eighty-five year old Margaret Keylor, born in Germany.

1882: Hannah (Rickard) Sayles/Mills reportedly dies in 1882. It is almost certain that Hannah is buried in Medina County, Ohio; however, the specific location of her burial is uncertain.
