Bertha was the daughter of James TIppen and Lydia Pelton. James was killed in the Civil War. She was married 3 times, the first to James McNelly in 1873 with whom she had 3 children, Maude 1875-1966, Harlow 1878-1912, and Mary Elizabeth 1881-1968. Her second marriage was to Richard Bell in 1889 and the third was to Andrew Fowl in 1926.
