Gretchen Annette (Civey) Bates, 63, Beatrice, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010, at Beatrice Manor Care Center, Beatrice, after a long battle with cancer.

She was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on Sept. 30, 1947, to the Rev. George and Annette (Foley) Civey.

Gretchen's father was a minister, so she lived in many states as she was growing up. She was baptized in 1956 at the Christian Church in Cairo, Ill. Gretchen graduated from Midway High School in Midway, Ky. and then from Midway Junior College with an AA Degree in Home Economics.

Gretchen married Bruce Bates April 15, 1977, in Norfolk. She worked at the Beatrice State Developmental Center for 35 years and at the Beatrice Public Library for nine years until she had to quit due to health reasons.

Gretchen participated as a mentor in the Citizen Advocacy of Jefferson and Gage Counties. Gretchen's second love of her life was her dog, Hairy Lee. Gretchen's favorite pastime was working on family history. She also enjoyed motorcycle riding with Bruce, going to the stock car races, rooting on her favorite drivers, and taking Hairy Lee for walks.

Gretchen is survived by her sons, Scott Bates and wife, Linda, of Beatrice, Todd Bates and wife, Connie, of Beatrice; daughter, Mary Hansel of Beatrice; grandchildren, Chris Hansel of Beatrice, Casey Grella of California, Sammi Grella of Beatrice, T.J. and Trenton Bates of Beatrice; brother, Professor George A. Civey, III and wife, Mary, of Richmond, Ky.; niece, Jorgianne (Civey) Robinson and husband, Lee, of South Carolina; great nephews, Lee and William Robinson of South Carolina; stepbrother, Carl Martin Vowels of California; parents-in-law, Deverne and Lucille Bates of Beatrice; sister in-law, Betty Lou Bates of Beatrice; cousins, Colleen Sevigne, Susan and Jim Civey.

Gretchen was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Lee Bates (Oct. 17, 2000); parents, Annette Newcomer (Foley) Civey (1956); the Rev. George A. Civey (1985); stepmother, Pauline Vowels (1983); stepsister, Mary Sue Vowels.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29, at Harman-Wright Mortuary Chapel, Seventh and Elk, Beatrice, with Pastor David Kramer officiating. There will be no public viewing. Burial will be in the Hooker Cemetery, rural Adams.
