Lorana was born May 18, 1914, the daughter of Charles W. Chenoweth and Caroline "Lina" Ray in Marietta. She married LaVerne W. Stoneking on April 6, 1935, in Havana. He preceded her in death Feb. 12, 1998.
Lorana was raised in a large family of 12 children, all of whom preceded her in death, with the exception of her sister, Lois Foxall of Abingdon.
She also proudly raised three children, Lawrence W. Stoneking, deceased; Merle R. Stoneking (Nita), Prairie City; and Bonnie Schenck (Ed Jr.), Abingdon.
Lorana cherished her beloved family, which consisted of 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren. She extended her love to so many, all of whom she considered to be her family.
While raising her family, Lorana cooked in area restaurants, worked at Abingdon Pottery and retired from Butler Manufacturing in 1976.
She was a member of Oquawka Methodist Church, belonged to the Oquawka Historical Society and BlueBell Tower Tenants Association. She loved her family, gardening, sewing and her dear friends, especially Martha Wicks. She took note of small gestures, like sending and receiving cards. She made little waste after living through the Depression.
Lorana was known as a wife, sister, friend, mother, grandmother and neighbor to all. Her door was always open, constantly leading to a full house, which she adored. She was in her element if she could cook for the entire family or her BlueBell friends. She cherished time at the river, enjoying sunsets, friends, her flowers, the birds, her garden, canning and cooking. Lorana always helped others and expected nothing in return. She never judged a person on their color, their actions or their past.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Qquawka Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the activities department at Care Center of Abingdon or Oquawka United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
