US Senator, Jurist. Born in the Marlborough District of South Carolina, he graduated from South Carolina College at Columbia in 1808 and was admitted to the bar in 1811. In 1816 he settled permanently in the Darlington District. Evans served as a State Solicitor from 1816 to 1829, a judge of the Circuit Court from 1829 to 1835, and a Justice of the State Supreme Court from 1829 to 1852. Apart from three early terms in the State House of Representatives (1812 to 1813, 1816) he avoided the political arena until the last years of his long career. In 1852 Evans was elected as a Democrat to the US Senate and served from 1853 until his death in office at age 71. During that time he was Chairman of the Committee to Audit and Control the Contingent Expenses and the Committee on Revolutionary Claims. He was buried near his ancestral family home at Society Hill, Darlington County. There is a cenotaph in his memory at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC.
