at Upper Merion Township in Pennsylvania.
After his marriage and birth of their first child at Sanford, Esther went there with him, then they returned to Sanford by 1848.
Nahum inherited the genetic eye disorder 'Retinitis Pigmentosa' becoming practically blind in his old age.

Mr. Nahum W. Gowen, died on Thursday morning, April 9, at the home of his
only son, Franklin, on Lafayette Street.
Mr. Gowen had been a resident of Wakefield for many years.
He had been quite feeble for several weeks, but the direct cause of his death was heart failure.
In early manhood he went south and taught school, and afterward became a worker in marble and set many of the stones in the old cemetery.
During recent years Mr. Gowen had the misfortune of being blind, but was an entertaining conversationalist and was
well informed on historical facts.
He was a member of the Baptist Church
at Springvale in Maine.
