John Frank Day Jr. (1909-2000)
Carl Russell Day (1912-1989)

John Frank Day was a school teacher, cotton-gin operator, hardware and clothing merchant, public school board chairman, farmer, and sheep rancher over his life. He graduated from Normal School and taught school in Anderson County. In 1899 in Palestine, Anderson Co. TX, he was charged with the murder of Mr. Watts, a parent of one of his students, and aquitted on grounds of self-defense. After marrying in 1902, he sold his cotton-gin and moved to Eden, Concho Co., TX where he opened Day's Dry Goods, a general store supplying hardware, drugs, and clothing for the community. He bought two small farms outside of Eden where he grew cotton, maize, corn, and grazed cattle.

About 1938, when the Dust Bowl struck West Texas, John swapped his farm for 17 Sections of land about 17 miles south of Roswell, Chavez Co., New Mexico. John and his son, Carl R Day, drove 800 head of sheep about 350 miles across West Texas plains to the new ranch.

The Eden Dry Goods Store was given to John's oldest son, Gilbert Gray Day.

About 1946 the sheep ranch was exchanged for an irrigation cotton farm south of Haggerman, New Mexico. John sold the Haggerman farm about 1957, when he moved to a house two miles south of Roswell, NM,until his death in 1958.

John Day went through life as John "Frank" Day. However, in 1918 when he registered for the World War I Draft, he signed his name as John "Franklin" Day. Franklin was more of a family name than Frank, but the Day descendants have no knowledge of when he choose to shorten the name to "Frank", the name he gave to his son.
