Civil War Union Army Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as a Captain in the 10th Missouri (Union) Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 50th United States Colored Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteer on March 26, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the campaign against the city of Mobile and it's defenses".
