Oakley, James, a member of the Mormon Battalion, Company D, was born Sept. 5, 1826, near Brooklyn, Long Island, N.Y., a son of Ezra Oakley and Elizabeth DeCroot. He moved with his parents to Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1842, joined the Church when sixteen years old, being baptized in the spring of 1843. He remained in Nauvoo until the exodus in 1846, joined the Mormon Battalion at Council Bluffs, but fell ill and went to Pueblo, under Capt. James Brown. He arrived in Great Salt Lake Valley in 1847, went to California in 1849 with the gold rush, but returned to Utah in 1851, locating in Springville. He took an active part in the Indian wars of early Utah history and in all things he lived the life of the hardy, courageous pioneer and empire builder. He died in Springville, Utah, April 30, 1915. It was said of him that he had such a horror of debt that he never owed a dollar in his life to anybody.
