Capt Paul died in hospital of natural causes while home on leave from his deployment to Kandahar. While deployed in operations, he was the adjutant for the health services support unit of Joint Task Force Afghanistan. In November 2010, it was announced that his name would be added to the official list of Canadian Forces casualties sustained in support of the mission in Afghanistan. The number of fallen is now established at 153.
Capt Paul joined the military in 1976 as a medical assistant. During his career he served from coast to coast, on ship and on shore. Notably, he served as school Chief Warrant Officer of the Canadian Forces Health Services Training Centre and as CF Health Services Group Chief Warrant Officer. He was a driving force behind the founding of the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants. A commanding officer stated that Capt Paul's career can be defined by his inspirational leadership, a passion for teaching and mentoring, a selfless dedication to the Canadian Forces, and helping those in need.
He received the Canadian Forces Decoration & bar (CD), General Campaign Star (GCS) and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) bar, Sacrifice Medal (posthumous).
Capt Paul leaves behind his wife Jeannie, son David, daughter Marisa, mother Madonna, father John, brothers, sisters, extended family and many friends.
Funeral was held on February 16, 2010 at Our Lady of the Visitation Church in Ottawa.
Capt Paul is commemorated on page 237 of the In the Service of Canada (1947 - 2014) Book of Remembrance.
