There are several people who go by the name of Enoch Metcalf which can make distinguishing them one from another somewhat confusing. This is especially so because the Enoch Metcalf that married Polly Ann Martin has a father named Enoch Metcalf and also a brother who has a son named Enoch Fleming Metcalf.
The parents of Enoch Metcalf is Thomas Metcalf and Anne Fleming and they had other male children that also named their children Enoch Metcalf.
The Enoch Metcalf that married Polly A. Martin was born in
Kentucky in 1839 presumably Calloway County,Kentucky where
Enoch Metcalf and his wife Nancy Mott were living. Enoch and his family migrated to Scott County, Missouri and are enumerated there on the 1840 US Census.
Enoch Metcalf migrated to Pulaski County, Illinois and is enumerated on the 1850 US Census as follows:
Enoch Metcalf-58 Kentucky
Henry Metcalf-23 Kentucky
Susan Metcalf-16 Kentucky
Enoch Metcalf-11 Kentucky
The family that Polly A. Martin came from were living in
Scott County, Missouri in 1850 and prior to that Johnson County, Illinois.
See Scott County, Missouri 1850 US Census
William Martin-41 Tennessee
Sarah Martin-40 Tennessee
Namaan Martin-19 Illinois
James Martin-16 Illinois
Catherine Martin-14 Illinois
Washington Martin-12 Illinois
Polly Ann Martin-10 Illinois
Sometime between 1850 and 1860 Enoch Metcalf the father
presumably passed away and his children were either married are went to live with someone.
Enoch marries Polly Ann Martin in March of 1859.
Next, you see Enoch Metcalf enumerated with his mother-in-law Sarah Martin on the 1860 US Census in Johnson County, Illinois dated 19 June 1860 as follows:
Sarah Martin-48 Missouri
Washington Martin-22 Illinois
Enoch Metcalf-21 Tennessee (later Kentucky)
Margaret E. Jones-7 Illinois (Probably a grandchild)
Enoch is next is enumerated again with his mother-in-law
on the 1970 US Census in Johnson County, Illinois as follows:
Sarah Martin-58 Missouri
Margaret Jones-17 Missouri
Enoch Metcalf-31 Kentucky
Enoch F. Metcalf next marries Sarah Evans on 31 March 1872 in Alexander County, Illinois just 1 county away from Johnson County.
Enoch then is enumerated with his family on the 1880 Us Census, Goose Island, Alexander County, Illinois as follows:
Enoch Metcalf-40 Kentucky
Sarah Metcalf-26 Missouri
Alta(e) Metcalf-7 Illinois (Maybe Alma-?)
James H. Metcalf-1 Illinois
Frank Conroy-24 Arkansas
William Turpin-22 Tennessee
George Balus-17 Missouri
Sarah Metcalf remarried Riley Boles on 2 July 1893 In Alexander, Illinois see Statewide Marriage Index Volume I
Page 182.
Enoch and Sarah's youngest child was Grace A. Metcalf born ca. 1889 so presumably Enoch Fleming Metcalf died sometime
between 1888 and 1993 when Sarah remarried.
Sarah Evans Metcalf Boles died on 1 September 1929 in Road District 4, Alexander, Illinois and was buried the next day on 2 September 1929.
If anyone knows where Enoch Metcalf is buried and his wife Sarah A. Evans-Metcalf-Boles is buried please let me know.

Note: Why isn't Polly A. Martin listed with Enoch Metcalf and her mother on the 1880 Census? Mary E. Metcalf their daughter was born in August 1880 and the Census was in June of 1860. Polly A. Metcalf must have been somewhere else at the time of the 1880 Census record.
