Michael was the son of Paul and Paula (Jones) Vickery. He grew up in Gatlinburg, TN graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 1968. He married Paula Jones on May 30th, 1969. He entered military service in the US Army shortly thereafter. After completing Basic and Advanced Individual Training at the US Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, GA, he received orders to his first duty station with C Company, 1/5 Infantry, 1st Air Cavalry Division in Vietnam, and began his one-year tour of duty on 3 October 1969.
