Clement N. Bassett

  • Birth 1808 Gorham, Ontario County, New York, USA
  • Death 1849 Houston, Harris County, Texas, USA
  • Burial Unknown
  • Memorial ID 62186748

Clement Bassett was known to use the middle initial "N" throughout his life. His middle name is generally listed as Newton (the middle name of his son) although there is evidence his middle name was Norton. In December 1830, while a freshman at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, he is listed as "Clement N. Bassett." In the November 1832 Complete Alumni Register of Hamilton College, he is listed with his 1834 class as Bassett, Clement Norton." His paternal grandmother was Sarah Bassett (1747-1818), who was the daughter of Cornelius Bassett and Lydia Norton. So although his middle name is often listed as Newton the only known evidence during his lifetime shows it was Norton.

Clement N. Bassett was born about 1808, in Ontario County, New York, the third child of Fortunatus and Sybil (Bacon) Bassett. In September 1807 his father was residing in Augusta in Ontario county but in the 1810 U.S. census he was residing in Gorham in Ontario county. In September 1815 Clement's mother died ten days after giving birth to twins John and Sybil. In February 1818 Clement's paternal grandmother, Sarah Bassett, died and his father Fortunatus decided to move to Ohio with part of his family.
Fortunatus left Clement and his younger brother Allen with Fortunatus' older brother William Bassett to raise while Fortunatus took his oldest son William and daughters Sarah and Abigail to Hamilton county, Ohio where his cousin resided. Fortunatas died in Hamilton county, Ohio in August 1819 at the age of 44.

Clement and his brother Allen were raised by his uncle William and aunt Anna (Blair) Bassett and their family in Yates county, New York. In December 1830 Clement N. Bassett was enrolled as a freshman at Hamilton College in Clinton, Oneida Co., New York. He was studying for the ministry but apparently did not graduate with his Class of 1834. After attending Hamilton College Clement went to Selma, Alabama where he practiced law before moving to Texas. Clement had "a fine education and was the master of six languages." Frank A. Johnson, A History of Texas and Texans, Vol. III (Chicago and New York: The American Historical Society, 1914) at p. 1542.

In 1836 Clement Bassett came to Texas. He married Julia Maria Lee Beale on January 8, 1839, in Lynchburg, Harrisburg (later Harris) county, Texas. Their marriage notice appeared in the Telegraph and Texas Register newspaper, published in Houston, Texas, Vol. 4, No. 29, Ed. 1, on Wednesday, January 16, 1839:

"MARRIED on Tuesday, 8th of January, at Capt. Fergurson's farm, Harrisburg county, by the Rev. John McCullough, [C.] N. BASSET, Esq., to Mist. JULIA MARIA LEE BEALE, late of Baltimore, Md."

Clement and Julia made their home in Richmond in Fort Bend county, Texas, just west of Houston. Clement was in the legal profession and practiced law in Richmond. He was active in politics and worked for statehood for Texas.

Clement and Julia Bassett had five children. Clement N. Bassett died of cholera in Houston, Texas in 1849 at the age of about 41. His widow Julia married Thomas Jefferson Smith in January 1854. Julia Beale Bassett Smith died in May 1888 in Richmond, Texas.
