~MY ANCESTOR~

The son of RICHARD & ELIZABETH (ALSOP) BALDWIN, he married first Sarah Buckingham and second MARY BOTSFORD on December 3, 1692 in Milford, Conn. He apparently was married a third time since his wife, Abigail (unknown) is mentioned in this will.

He was born shortly after his father death and even though his father was rich, he was not entitled to any of the distribution of his father's estate according to Connecticut law. However, in 1711/12 and at the age of 45-46, his brothers & sister conveyed in Milford records to him, one-half of Hogg Meadow, because he did not receive an inheritance from his father in 1665. Hogg meadow had been a gift to his father, Richard Baldwin, from Tantannomy, an Indian.

After his marriage, he lived with his family in Woodbridge, which was part of Milford at that time. The date of the death of his wife, Sarah, before Dec. 3, 1692 (the date of her father's will, in which he bequeathed to husband, Barnabas, and the two children--Thomas & Barnabas).

The children of Mary (Botsford) & Barnabas Baldwin:
Timothy Baldwin (bpt. 1698/9)
Mary (Baldwin) (bpt. 1698/9, d. before 1740)
Theophilus Baldwin (1699 - 1784)
Henry Baldwin (1702 - 1727)
SYLVANUS BALDWIN (1706 - 1785), my ancestor.

His will dated May 5, 1740, was proved Oct. 19, 1741 and does not mention Mary and Henry who were deceased. He bequeathed 40 shillings to "ye College in New Haven". In 1738, he was part of the Milford citizens who established Derby and the parish of Amity. In Sept.2, 1688, along with brother, Theophilus, he witnessed a deed in Milford from brothers, Sylvanus and Zachaiah. He received the 90th lot during the distribution of lots in Milford around 1692 and in 1693/4 he conveyed land to Joseph Peck, Jr. and William Fowler. He was a "Selectman" of Milford to the General Assembly, a collector of rates for Rev. Samuel Andrews, and was an appraiser of Gov. Treats estate in 1710.
