"Sgt. William Ellis was with the first armored division of the U.S. army under General Patton when captured by the Germans in Tunisia in February (15th) of 1943. He was sergeant of a tank command in what has been described as one of the toughest battles the Americans had to face in that area. He was taken to a prison camp in Stalag III-B, Germany in Feb. 1944." ( excerpts taken from an article in The Washington Democrat, Washington, Indiana, Thurs., Aug. 17, 1944 ) After his release, Bill returned and married his sweetheart Audrey Beatrice Cosby on Sept. 1, 1945 in Muncie, Indiana.
