WAR VETERAN IS FOUND DEAD IN WASHHOUSE
Harvey S. Baugher Swallowed Poison, Members Of His Family Said.
Found dead in a washhouse which he had been using for sleeping quarters, Harvey S. Baugher, 43-year-old war veteran, was declared a suicide early Thursday. Members of his family said he had placed poison in his coffee with the intent of taking his own life.
Baugher, who had not been staying with his wife at their home one mile west of Rocky Springs, had been given permission recently by Joseph F. Hildebrand, farmer near whose home the family resided, to sleep in the washhouse. A son, Harvey, Jr., aged 10, also slept in the outbuilding with his father at times.
About 2:30 o'clock Thursday the boy went to the Hildebrand home and awoke members of the family, saying that his father was dead. Mr. Hildebrand, going to the washhouse verified the boy's statement, and then telephoned Sheriff Roy M. Hiltner. The sheriff, accompanied by Justice Walter E. Sinn and Dr. H. L. Fahrney, arrived at the scene about 4 o'clock.
Dr. Fahrney found that arsenic poisoning was the cause of the death, and Justice Sinn, acting coroner, gave a verdict of death by poison self-administered.
The Baugher family formerly resided on West Patrick street, this city, but moved to Rocky Springs neighborhood a few months ago. Baugher was a member of the 313th Infantry during the World War and was gassed while in service overseas. Members of his family said he had been drinking heavily.
Baugher is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ethel Stevens Baugher, one daughter, Ethel Marie, and two sons, Harvey S., Jr., and Henry Lee Baugher, all at home. He was a son of Mrs. Rhoda M. [N.] Baugher and the late Samuel Baugher, near Jefferson. The following brothers and sisters also survive: Harry, Deefield; Roy, near Buckeystown; Oscar, near Adamstown; Ray, near Walkersville; Mrs. Charles Ott, Emmitsburg; Mrs. Luther Stull, Doubs; Mrs. Howard Stevens, Knoxville; Mrs. Grant Creek, near Feagaville; and Mrs. Lawrence Powers, Arizona.
The body was prepared for burial at the funeral home of M. R. Etchison and Son, 214 North Market street, and will be removed to his late home this afternoon from where the funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Interment will be made in Glade Valley cemetery, Walkersville. M. R. Etchison and Son, funeral directors.
