Mary was the daughter of Noah and Judith (Short) Brown of Rowe, Massachusetts. She married John McCloud probably 6 May 1813 in Bennington, Vermont. After her husband died 31 March 1836 in North Adams, Massachusetts, Mary traveled west to Kane County, Illinois, with either her son Noah and his family or her daughter Nancy Aldrich and her family.

Mary Brown McCloud was a descendant of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley, who arrived on the ship Mayflower in 1620.

Mary was living with her daughter Nancy (McCloud) Aldrich when the census enumerator recorded her in Dundee Township, Kane County, Illinois, on 3 September 1850. She died just four days later on September 7. She is probably buried in the Schroeder Cemetery on a lot assigned to Lawson McCloud, her son, or Lorenzo Aldrich, her son-in-law.
