Mr. Gabbert was born on November 15, 1910, in the home of his maternal grandparents in Columbia, Miss. The first of five children of Meriwether William and Ruby Magee Gabbert, he lived in Senatobia, Tate County, Miss., all his life. He attended the University of Mississippi, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

In 1938, he established the Gabbert Oil Company, a distributor and retailer of gasoline, oil, and other petroleum-based products. During the ensuing years, this successful Senatobia-based company expanded its product line and marketing territory. He sold the business to his brother, Magee Gabbert, in 1956.

While managing the Gabbert Oil Company, Mr. Gabbert farmed on the side. After selling the company, he became a full-time farmer and rancher.

In 1961, he and his wife donated 160 acres of their land so that Senatobians could build the area's first golf course and country club, Back Acres Country Club. He was the first greenskeeper of the golf course.

Mr. Gabbert joined the Senatobia Methodist Church in 1917 and was an active member of that church throughout his life. He served as chairman of the church's building committee and was an Official Board member, a Sunday School teacher, and a choir member.

He married Eleanor Stigler Lickfold in 1941; when she died in 1994, they had been married more than 53 years. They had four children and five grandchildren.

Mr. Gabbert died on June 25, 1996, in Senatobia.
