Aged Negro Died Today
Winter Canty Died at the Age of 84, After Having Lived a Highly Useful Life.
~Winter Canty, an old-time negro, died this morning at the home of his daughter in this city, at the age of 84 years, after having lived a long and useful life to the best of his ability.
~He was a "white man's darky," in the truest sense of the word. Every person, white and black who knew him, was his friend and his death will be sincerely mourned. He was as honest as the days are long and had the utmost confidence of everyone who knew him because they knew they could depend upon him.
~During slavery he belonged to General Canty, of Ft. Mitchell, Ala., and when the war between the states broke out, he went to the front with his master, but was sent home to assist in caring for the family. Along toward the close of hostilities he underwent many hardships for the sake of his white friends, but notwithstanding the temptations that were laid before him to desert them, he remained true.
~Since the war he has spent the greater part of his life with various members of his former master's family and today they are mourning his death, because they realise that they have lost a friend that has been tried and not found wanting. His funeral will take place at some time tomorrow.
