Meriwether W. Gabbert was born on Dec. 29, 1879, at his maternal grandparents' home near Senatobia, Tate Co., Miss. After finishing high school in Senatobia and completing a business program in Memphis, Tenn., he joined his father's mercantile business, the J. T. Gabbert Company. He established his own mercantile and farming business in Senatobia in 1922.
During his 55-year business career, Meriwether ("Buddy") Gabbert acquired extensive farm properties, eventually controlling approximately 4000 acres. He continued to operate a successful mercantile business primarily for those who farmed his land, until his death. One of his many worthwhile business objectives was to enable sharecroppers on his land to become renters. The renters owned their own equipment, which resulted in a higher standard of living.
In 1916, Mr. Gabbert and five other Tate Countians organized People's Bank. From the early 1930s to the time of his death, he served as a director of Senatobia Bank, which his father, James T. Gabbert, had co-founded in 1900. For several years he was a member of the Senatobia City School board, where he also served as president.
Mr. Gabbert was a steward and trustee of the First United Methodist Church in Senatobia and served as superintendent of the church's Sunday School for 25 years. When he died on Oct. 3, 1957, he had held membership in the church longer than any other member.
Mr. Gabbert married Ruby Magee of Columbia, Miss., in 1909, and they lived in Senatobia for the remainder of their lives. They raised five children and had twelve grandchildren.
