Karl Ludwig Bernays, baptized Ferdinand Cölestin Bernays who was also known as Charles Louis Bernays, was a German journalist and associate of Karl Marx. Emigrating to the United States in the late 1840s, he worked as a journalist in Missouri. Bernays opened the Highland Brewery in Highland, Illinois in 1854. In 1856 two German immigrants, Gerhart Schott and his son Martin, became partners in his brewery. The following year the Schotts bought out Bernays and the company was renamed Schott Breweries, Inc.
