From the O'Bryant-O'Keefe Funeral Home Announcements:

Wynette Elizabeth Allen

ALLEN Wynette Elizabeth Allen, age 87, passed away April 12, 2012, in Atlanta, GA, of complications following a stroke. The middle daughter of Roman Stanley and Ruby Mae Ellett, she was born in Tallahatchie County, MS, on February 22, 1925. To her family, including two sisters, Catherine Horton and Corine Milam, and a brother, Thurman Ellett, she was known as Sister throughout her life. Sister attended Charleston High School and one year of college at Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia, where she studied home economics. She enjoyed sewing, especially making Easter dresses for her grandchildren, and baking. Her carrot cake and chocolate cake recipes were famous in family and church circles. During World War II, Sister married Hayden Mullen, and the couple lived in Grenada after the war. Wynette worked as a seamstress at the Grenada Hosiery Mill, and Hayden managed a skating rink that they owned. They relocated to Pascagoula in the 1950s, both becoming employees at Ingalls Shipbuilding. The couple joined Calvary Baptist Church and in 1961, adopted a daughter. After Hayden's death in 1982, Sister married William "Bill" Allen. They enjoyed a 22-year marriage, often traveling-to Hawaii for their honeymoon, to the mountains to see the leaves turning, to Montana to visit friends, and to Jackson and Atlanta to see their grandchildren. In retirement, Sister took piano and painting lessons. She relocated to Atlanta in 2011, where she was a resident of Wesley Woods Towers and enjoyed the early morning coffee clatch, talent shows, the exercise program, and having her paintings featured in an art display. She is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Mullen and two granddaughters-Charlotte Elizabeth and Gabriella Corine Watts, students at Emory and Princeton universities. Among other nieces and nephews, she leaves behind her beloved Fredia and J.W. Scott, who helped care for her for many years, as well as many treasured friends. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Monday, April 16, 2012 in the Chapel of O'Bryant-O'Keefe Funeral Home in Pascagoula, MS. Private entombment will follow. Those unable to attend may register at www.obryantokeefe.com. Arrangements are under the direction of O'Bryant-O'Keefe Funeral Homes.
