DR. WHITNEY PASSED SATURDAY MORNING
POPULAR PRACTIONER HERE
FOR 35 YEARS; SERVED COUNTRY OVERSEAS
The community was saddened Saturday morning upon learning that Dr. Howard Elhanan Whitney, a practicing physician here for over 35 years, had passed away about nine o'clock, the immediate cause of death being heart trouble. He had not been in good health for several months. He was born in Ypsilanti, Mich., July 14, 1873, the son of J.H. and Fanny Whitney, who later became residents of Otsego, the father being identified with local paper mills for years. After his graduation from high school he took up the study of medicine and was graduated from the Michigan Medical college in 1895, at the age of 22 years. Because of his youth he was advised not to begin the practice of medicine until later so he entered Hahenermann Medical College in Chicago where he spent the next two years as a member of the faculty. In 1898 he came to Otsego to establish himself in practice continuing in his profession here for 35 years, his service to the community being unbroken except for a period of about a year when he was in service with the American forces overseas, winning merited recognition and advancement in military rank. He was united in marriage with Ina B. Moore, two years after coming to Otsego. Surviving are his wife and son, Howard. He was a member of the Academy of Medicine, the Masonic lodge in Otsego and the Elks in Kalamazoo and was the highest ranking officer of the American Legion in Otsego. Several years ago he accepted the faith of the Catholic church and prior to his death he became a communicant of St. Margaret's church in Otsego and it was in this faith that he was laid to rest. Services were held in St. Margaret's church Tuesday morning at ten o'clock, solemn requiem high mass being said by Fr. Donahue, assisted by Fr. Hackett of Kalamazoo and Fr. Mooney of Whiteford. The music was by St. Augustine choir and a soloist from Kalamazoo. The services were especially impressive and beautiful. Interment was made in Mountain Home cemetery, the local Legion Post assisting with the service at the grave.
Dr. Whitney was always a loyal friend, public spirited and interested in those things which are for the public good. He had a host of friends who mourn his passing.

From Otsego Union March 16, 1933.
