M L VanGilder in 1995 notes: 9 December 1875, attorney James F Hardin shot attorney William H. Phelps twice in a court room, who recovered (Phelps had been elected to state legislature in 1872). Then James F. Hardin was gunned down by blasts from shotguns on 3 February 1876 when going home. His widow signed a complaint against William H and brother Charles H Phelps with an arrest made. Both acquitted on 28 September 1876.

CHARLES H. PHELPS DIES
PASSES AWAY AT HOT SPRINGS THIS MORNING
Had Been in Poor Health Past Two Years
Burial To Be In Carthage
Charles H. Phelps, former well known pioneer Carthage resident, died at Hot Springs, Arkansas at 12:15 o'clock this morning, according to messages received here today. He had been in failing health the past two years and his condition had been critical the past several days.
Mr. Phelps was past 60 years old. He was born and reared in New York state but came to Carthage when 18 years old and resided here continuously except for the last few years, when he has moved temporarily to other places for his health. He formerly was deputy state oil inspector of this district. He was a brother of the late Col. William H. Phelps, prominent Democratic politician and a prominent citizen here.
For the last year, Mr. Phelps and his wife have conducted the Algoma Hotel at Hot Springs. The wife, to whom he was married a few years ago, and a son, Harry Phelps, of St. Louis, survive.
The body was to be brought to Carthage the next evening on the White River train.
Funeral services were scheduled to be held at the Knell chapel.
