Songwriter. Born in Hohensalza, Prussia (now Inowrocław, Poland), he gained renown in the early 20th Century as a songwriter, vaudeville performer, talent agent and scout. He composed popular songs such as "By the Light of the Silvery Moon," and "School Days", and gave breaks to new talents such as Groucho Marx and Eddie Cantor.
